This magnificent tray is hand painted in Peru by talented local artists, using a six-hundred year old technique of reverse painting on glass. This technique was brought to Peru by the Spanish in the 1500’s and has been practiced there ever since. Reverse painting consists of applying paint to a piece of glass and then viewing the image by turning the glass over and looking through the glass at the image. Reverse paintings are a challenge to create as the artist must remember, for example, things like putting the pupil of an eye on the glass before the iris, exactly the opposite of normal painting. If the artist neglects to put the pupil on the glass first, he or she won’t be able to correct the error as it isn't possible to get in between the glass and the paint once it's applied.
This tray is great for serving on, a great gift and looks wonderful in any room. What I love about this item is that I spent a lot of time looking for trays that were easy maintenance and had great strong handles.
