This unique gift wrap is made from handmade jute paper accented with bits of newspaper in Bengali script. Artisans of Shuktara Handmade Paper in rural Bangladesh use jute-the "golden fiber" of Bangladesh-to produce this paper. After soaking and pounding the fiber to make a pulpy mass, artisans add it to water and stir until it is uniformly smooth. Newspaper bits and color are added for visual interest. Each large sheet of paper is made individually by lifting the pulp in a thin layer on a framed screen. The paper is placed in the sun to dry-after which it is ready for use as gift wrap.
