This fun Christmas card displays three presents. It is made in Feni, Bangladesh at the Shuktara Handmade Paper Project. This project was developed to revive a traditional craft and create rural employment for poor women. At Shuktara, a Bengali word meaning "morning star," about 80 women produce paper from jute scraps and hemp. Shuktara can produce thousands of full-size sheets of handmade, environmentally friendly, acid free paper each day.
The paper is made from scraps of jute gathered from the jute mills. The fibers are beaten into a pulp and are floated in a large tub of water. The pulp is collected on a hand-held screen until a thin, even sheet of paper is formed. It is transferred to a steel sheet, dried in the sun, then peeled from the sheet. The paper is then cut to shape and size. Rag, water hyacinth and other fibers are added to give color and improve strength and smoothness. Fair Trade
