Kisii Stone Circle Dancers

This clean-lined sculpture portrays two abstract figures in joyful dance. It is made of pink and white variegated Kisii stone, a type of soapstone found only in six quarries located near Tabaka, in western Kenya.

The villagers of Tabaka are mostly subsistence farmers. In order to send their children to school, they earn an income by carving Kisii stone, a tradition they pass down through the generations. Carvers first cut the naturally large-sized Kissii rocks into smaller pieces with an axe, then chisel a rough shape from the smaller pieces of rock and use a file to smooth the design. Women sandwash the Kisii stone pieces and lay them in the sun to dry, completing the carving process. The women polish the pieces by rubbing them with a soft cloth and applying a clear floor wax to accentuate the stone’s natural luster.
