A little something about "created" gemstones.
Most created gemstones contain the common elements that occur in
natural gemstones and this applies to created opals. One common element
missing in created opals however, is water. The absence of water makes the created opal
much more durable and harder than the natural occurring opal. In 1974 Pierre Gilson, a Frenchman was the first person to create an opal. So what usually takes millions of years in nature to create can now be done over a number of months in a laboratory.
Created opals have a very regular pattern, a brightness or brilliant play of color (or fire). They are much harder and more durable that its natural counterpart. So breakages and longevity are a
plus. Some natural opals can contain both a regular
pattern and brightness but this is rare and very expensive.
