This handsome salad bowl was carved from fallen acacia tortillis wood. No tree is ever cut down. These bowls are made by the Maasai tribe of the Great Rift Valley of Kenya and Tanzania.
When a severe drought devastated Kenya's pasturelands and impacted the livelihood of the Maasai people, Katy and Philip Leakey devised a solution. They designed contemporary, stylish products the Masaii people could create using their traditional skills out of local, sustainable natural resources, such as grass and fallen wood. Then the Leakey's figured out how to market the Masaii's products to an international audience, bringing economic stability back to the Masaii.
Purchasing this product supports the Maasai people, their traditions and their environment.
Because no two trees are the same, no two bowls are the same. Each is as unique as the individual who owns it.
Recommended care: Wash in warm water with mild liquid soap. Do not put in the dishwasher. Wipe lightly with a food safe vegetable oil as needed to retain the vibrant luster of the wood.
