This wedding sculpture is made from kisii stone, a beautiful pink and white variegated stone found only in six quarries near Tabaka, Kenya. Kisii is known for its carvability, smooth finish and wondrous color variations.
The sculpture is abstract but very symbolic. The smaller loop symbolizes the bride, and is placed under the larger loop, the groom, because traditionally the husband will be her hunter and protector for the duration of their lives. The two loops symbolize that the bride and groom have been joined through marriage but are still two individual people. Traditionally, family or close friends give this sculpture to the bridge and groom on their wedding day.
The traditional blessing that accompanies this sculpture goes: May this union last as long as the stone from which this sculpture is carved.
