When I went to Laos I visited some of the marketplaces where the Hmong tribespeople sell their wares. I came across these wonderful hand-stitched children's storybooks.
So colorful, the books are designed to enable kids to learn English or Hmong. Many pages feature a word in English, that word in Hmong and then a creative stitched picture of that word. Other pages show common activities in Hmong life, such as, "My mother is feeding chickens" or "My father is planting the rice", written in both English and Hmong. Some pages show how to sound out the Hmong word in English. So sweet and such a wonderful present for a child.
Laos is the landlocked country sandwiched between Vietnam and Thailand in Southeast Asia. The Hmong in Laos are mostly poor, rural farmers, but the incredible hand-stitched traditional handicrafts they create are bought up quickly at local markets, giving them crucial funds to improve their standard of living.
Approximately 3'' by 3''. Colors, text and pictures vary, each book is completely unique.
