Modeled on a popular human-powered form of transportation in Bangladesh and India, this "rickshaw" planter is hand-painted by rickshaw artists. Rickshaws first came to Bangladesh from Kolkata, India, in the 1930s. As the large plate on the back of the rickshaws developed, it became the canvas for a new genre of rickshaw art-depicting flowers, village scenes, movie stars and gods and goddesses. In addition to these plates, rickshaws are ornately decorated in a style reminiscent of the Mughal Empire, in which emperors traveled on decorated horses and elephants with bells, umbrellas, tassels and cushions.
