This coiled bamboo footed bowl is handcrafted by artisans in Vietnam. Producing coiled bamboo items is a multi-stage process that extends over months. First bamboo is soaked in mud for three to six months to remove insect infestation. After drying, the artisan cuts the stalks into thin, narrow strips and coils them around a wood or bamboo form, working inward to create the desired product. A salad bowl or platter takes about three hours to coil.
The product is then soaked in glue for three hours and placed in the sun to dry for four days. During the drying process the bamboo acquires a reddish tint. Next the artisans sand or shave both sides of the piece to remove rough edges.
Artisans then apply red cashew lacquer, followed by varnish. After this they wash and sand the product up to seven times, resulting in a perfectly smooth finished product.
