Taken at Wat Phra Mayathat in Ayuthaya, Thailand. Ayuthaya was the last capital of Thailand, prior to Bangkok. Thus, the city is full of gorgeous temple and statue ruins. Many ancient statues are in pieces, not from the passage of time, but from repeated pillages from Burmese invaders from the East. It was the conquer of Ayuthaya by the Burmese in 1767 that forced the relocation of the capital. This head of the Buddha is all that remains from a temple that once stood on this spot. Over the centuries, the head became embedded in the growing roots of a large tree, naturally creating this surreal scene.
