This lovely handmade zippered bag with side strap is perfect for holding toiletries, pencils, makeup, money or medicine. It is made by a Hmong artisan in Laos.
Laos is the landlocked country located next to Vietnam and Thailand in Southeast Asia. The Hmong in Laos are mostly poor, rural farmers, but the incredible hand-stitched handicrafts they create are bought up quickly at local markets, giving them crucial funds to improve their standard of living. If you purchase this bag you can feel secure in knowing that you have helped a Laos artisan support their family.
The stitched designs on the bag are also meaningful because over centuries of persecution by the Chinese, Hmong women tried to preserve their banned writing by stitching stylized characters into their crafts. Sadly, traditional Hmong writing was eradicated, but some of its symbols are believed to be preserved in stitched designs like the one on this bag.
Each bag is completely unique. Below is a selection of the bags available. Please specify if you see a particular bag you would prefer.
