This
beautiful tissue box was hand-painted in Peru by talented local artists, using
a six-hundred year old technique of reverse painting on glass. The technique
was brought to Peru by the Spanish in the 1500’s, and has been practiced there
ever since. Reverse painting is executed by applying paint to a piece of glass,
turning the glass over, and viewing the image by looking through it. Reverse
paintings are a challenge to create as the artist must remember fine details.
For example, the artist would put the pupil of an eye on the glass before the
iris, which would be exactly the opposite of normal painting. If the artist
neglects to put the pupil on the glass first, he or she won’t be able to
correct the error as it isn't possible to get in between the glass and the paint
once it's applied. This tissue box has gold, green, red, and white accents, and has intricately lovely flowering trees painted on it.
