This fun apron is handmade by a Hmong artisan in Laos, a landlocked country neighboring Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The design features a traditional stitched Hmong design in brown set upon blue.
Over centuries of persecution by the Chinese, Hmong women tried to preserve their banned writing by stitching stylized characters into their handicrafts. Sadly, Hmong traditional writing was eradicated but some Hmong characters are still believed to be preserved in traditional stitching designs like the one found on this apron.
In Laos, the traditional Hmong farming life is tenuous, but the incredible hand-stitched handicrafts the Hmong create are quickly bought up at local markets, giving the Hmong crucial funds to survive.
When you purchase this apron you can feel secure in knowing that you have helped a Lao artisan support their family.
Each apron is unique from any other; differences in each apron are a testament to their handmade creation.
