This photograph was taken in Sihanoukville, Cambodia in February of 2008. I had taken a walk down the beach with an American friend and some Cambodian boys, who were sent to the beach every day by their parents to collect cans. We had become good friends with these boys and were having fun helping them look for cans while exploring this area of the beach. This little girl and her baby brother were quietly watching us play, the little girl eating an egg, in front of the shacks where they likely lived by the end of the beach. The two children had the most beautiful eyes. I asked if I could take their photo and the little girl nodded OK.
Many Cambodians, trying to eke out a living, depend on the growing tourist trade in Sihanoukville to get by, whether by collecting cans, selling fruit, painting toenails or cooking meals.
